Kevin Durant might have fallen victim to LeBron James in the NBA Finals, but Durant was able to team up with LeBron in London as the two won Olympic gold together with the United States men’s basketball team earlier this month. A championship appearance and a gold medal — not bad for a 23-year-old. Kevin Durant joined The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C.to discuss his experience winning gold with Team USA in London, playing for Coach K, what other events he got to see, and how he values he and his teammates bringing home gold.
On USA men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski being vocal :
“In games, yeah, he got after us plenty of times. When we started off bad against Tunisia and also Spain. He was animated, he was up in guys’ faces. And after the timeout we’d come out and handle business. He really doesn’t care who’s in front of him; he’s gonna go out there and be the same coach he is.”
On other events he got to see in London:
“I was able to watch the women’s soccer [team] beat Japan and get the gold. I watched swimming, boxing, track and field. So I was able to see a lot and I was very inspired.”
On the value of winning a gold medal to him:
“We fought so hard against each other during the regular season, but to fight against other countries for your country, that’s just on another level. I haven’t won an NBA championship. That’s my goal, but I could just see it in LeBron’s face and Kobe’s face [what it meant] to win a gold.”
