New Washington Redskins Back Alfred Morris Absolutely Hates Defenses
August 29, 2012 – 6:00 am by Brad Gagnon
The running back carousel in Washington looks as though it might stop with Alfred Morris coming out as the No. 1 guy. Who’s Alfred Morris? That’s a reasonable question, because the dude is a rookie sixth-round pick out of Florida Atlantic who wasn’t a factor in any NFL equations until a few weeks ago.
But that’s how quickly things can change in NFL training camps.
Alfred Morris joined Inside the Locker Room on ESPN 980 in Washington, D.C. to address his running style, his mean streak and if he ever expected he’d be in this position as the starting running back of the Washington Redskins.
On his aggressive running style and the contact he endures:
“That’s just my type of running style. I’ll be honest, I really don’t get too beat up. My whole thing is I initiate the contact instead of receiving it so it definitely saves my body a lot. I’m definitely not hurt. I’ve got the typical soreness I get after the game, but nothing unusual. I’m just a hard runner. I don’t shy away from contact.”
On his mean streak and hatred for defenses:
“I do not like defenses whatsoever. I tolerate our defense because we’re in this thing together but I just do not like defenses. … I used to be a defender myself though — I played linebacker in high school — but after that a lot of people said I was too short, so that went down the drain so I just stuck with running back. And just that willingness to never let anybody touch my quarterback. … That’s my whole mindset: I’m going to try to take your head off.”
On if he entered training camp expecting to get the shot he got:
“I didn’t know what to expect. I just hoped for the best. … I didn’t know I was going to be able to get opportunities as soon as I was able to, but I was just going in — my ultimate goal was to make the 53-man roster and I just said, ‘No matter what, whatever they give me, whatever opportunities I get I’m going to make the most of it.’”
