Jared Sullinger and Ohio State Are Looking For Their Own One Shining Moment
At one time this year there were skeptics about Ohio State’s number one ranking, but the Buckeyes have clearly separated themselves from every other team in college basketball. Not only do they have one of the best coaches in the country in Thad Matta, but they’re starting five is as good as anyone’s in the country and they have the best freshman in America, who is also one of the best players in the country as well.Jared Sullinger has been dominant in his freshman season and has become the best post player in America. Sully is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game and his presence inside is the biggest reason the Buckeyes are undefeated right now and have visions of cutting down the nets in Houston.Jared Sullinger joined KJR in Seattle with Mitch Levy to talk about what happened with the poster at the Minnesota game this past weekend, how surprised he is with his production so far this year, what he expects this weekend against Wisconsin, and whether or not he has thought about his future in the NBA yet.
What happened with the poster at the Minnesota game this past weekend:
“Oh well we played Minnesota, Minnesota played a great game, but we came up with the win and there was a poster where a guy had me on there and he put lipstick on it. I thought it was a great poster. My mom hardly ever gets to see things like that because she loves to make fun of me so I thought that would be a great poster for my mom. I asked him if I could have it and he said no. Then a couple of days ago on twitter he wrote me and said if you wanted this poster you should’ve just told me it was for your mom. I said its okay, you can keep it. Then he said give me your address and I will send it you. Of course I’m not going to give my address out on twitter. So I told him to send it to the Schottenstein Arena.”
If he gets surprised by his level of production so soon in his career:
“Yes I do. It’s very surprising to come out and see my average of 18 points and 10 rebounds. That’s very surprising, but at the same time I speak highly of myself and I think highly of myself so it really doesn’t surprise, but being that it’s on the college level and in an elite conference it’s very surprising.”
Who would be the best freshman in the country if Kyrie Irving didn’t get injured:
“Honestly I’m going with Kyrie. Kyrie is my boy and he was playing great basketball before he got hurt. It’s really hard to stop Kyrie. He can shoot the basketball, get to the basketball, and he can get the bigs involved. He’s a great basketball player so I will go with Kyrie in that aspect.”
What he expects this weekend against Wisconsin:
“It’s going to be a great crowd and a great game. Wisconsin hardly ever loses in Madison like you said. We’re looking to get Coach Matta his first win in Madison. It’s going to be a dogfight because they’re a great basketball team.”
Whether or not it could be a good thing to lose a game before the Tournament:
“It’s not the end of the world if we lose. At the end of the season it’s about how many wins or losses you have but it’s also about how many wins you can get in March and the first week of April.”
How much he dreams about his “one shining moment”:
“That song is on my IPod. Just a little bit. Miley Cyrus is a step ahead of that because Party in the USA is a great song.”
Whether or not he has thought about his future or the NBA:
“Honestly at this point in time, the mindset that I’m in, I’m not really thinking about the next level. It’s kinda hard but it’s easy for me at the same time too. I grew up as always stay in the present, never look into the future because your future can mess up your present. Right now with us being undefeated, having 24 wins, and having Wisconsin, one of the toughest teams to play at home, I’m really focused on Wisconsin right now. All that other stuff is really irrelevant.”
