After Hearing This Interview I May Actually Read A Book

NBA Agent David Falk is the author of a new book called “The Bald Truth”.  He’s most famous for being the agent for Michael Jordan and John Thompson and all his Georgetown bigs.  Falk sold his agency and was out of the agent business for awhile.  He recently got back in the game as Elton Brand’s agent. David Falk joined the Junkies on WJFK in DC on Friday to discuss the book.  There are some amazing stories in this 25 minute long interview and it’s fascinating to hear him talk about how the agent business has changed especially regarding AAU coaches wanting to get greased.  Here are some highlights.

“If it weren’t for his parents, I’m not sure there’d be an Air Jordan.  He was tired from the Olympics, it had been a long season, and he had been traveling and he really wasn’t interested.  His parents literally forced him to get on the plane.  The funny part is I didn’t know him at all.  I had met him literally twice.  I’m watching him at this meeting and he looked like he was as interested as I would watching paint dry.  When it got all done, I asked what do you think and he said this is awesome, I don’t want to go anywhere else.  You could have blown me over, I was stunned.”

MJ drafting Kwame Brown got brought up as a joke and this is what Falk said:

“That was not his decision.  That was someone else’s decision.  Kwame Brown was the first high school player ever drafted (#1 overall) and certain people in the organization thought that would have tremendous promotional value on ticket sales.”

On who Michael Jordan really wanted:

“Michael wanted Elton Brand.  They wanted to make a trade, he wanted to bring in Elton Brand.”

On the NBA agent business these days:

“The system is corrupted right now.  It’s corrupted for a number of reasons.  The union who regulates the agents, the NBA Players Association, needs to do a dramatically better job then they’re doing.  With the Mayo situation, they slapped the guy on the wrist, you know he was at the All-Star game, it was a joke.  That guy should be decertified for what he did.”
